Roman Blinds

All Roman blinds are fully lined and supplied with a top quality headrail and child-safe components to meet BS eN13120. Please see overleaf for details.

Any size is available up to a maximum width of 250cm and maximum drop of 240cm. Minimum width is 25cm. If a blind requires more than one width of fabric, the blind will be made with a wider central panel and a smaller pattern matched panel at each side. This will usually be required for blinds wider than 132cm, depending on the fabric width.

Cassette Headrail

Our standard roman headrail is a top quality discreet cassette system with a white plastic chain. Gold and silver coloured chains are also available; if these options are required please state on your order. The chain is a continuous loop which must be used with a chain tidy to secure the loose end to the wall to meet child safety requirements. If the installation height is known the chain will be finished 150cm above the floor. If installation height is not known the chain will be finished to 2/3rds of the drop of the blind, subject to a maximum chain length of 100cm*.

Breakaway Headrail

This is an alternative headrail designed specifically to meet child safety requirements. The chain mechanism releases from the headrail if a force of more than 6kg is applied, removing the need to use a chain tidy to secure the loose end of the chain to the wall. This can be easily re-inserted once removed. It also allows for a longer chain length than the standard cassette headrail - chain length will be 60cm from the floor if an installation height is provided, otherwise a maximum of 100cm or two thirds the drop of the blind*. A white chain is included as standard; silver is also available if requested. Please note, the breakaway option can't be used with a chain retention device / chain tidy. If you wish to use one of these please specify our standard cassette headrail.

Motorised Headrail

All roman blinds can be motorised for the ultimate in convenience and child-safety. We provide a wide range of options from the motorisation and remote control of a single blind, to multiple blinds (and blind types), to full home automation with smart phone/tablet app and voice control.

* White chains may be slightly shorter than the quoted length as they are supplied in 25cm increments and the next shortest size is used. To maximise chain length a silver chain should be specified. For further information on installation height and chain lengths please see the opposite page.

Alternative Linings

Roman blinds can be made with a choice of linings. Please refer to the linings page for details. Please note that with blackout lining some light will still be visible around the edges of the blind. As standard we recommend that blinds extend 5-10cm beyond the window recess on all sides, in the case of blackout blinds 10cm is recommended.

Measuring

Please refer to the 'Measuring for Blinds' page at the back of this folder and state on your order whether the sizes quoted are 'Recess Size' or 'Blind Size'.

CHILD SAFETY

Child Safety standards are covered by BS EN13120. All our roman blinds meet this standard. It is illegal to sell or professionally install a window blind that does not adhere to these standards. The standards require the following:

  • Safety devices for preventing any cords or chains from creating a hazardous loop
  • The testing of all safety critical systems of internal blinds
  • The testing of blinds using safety systems
  • The fitting of safety devices on cords or chains at the point of manufacture
  • Limitation on chain lengths
  • Warnings and instructions
Guidance from the Department of Business, Innovation & Skills advises that window blinds in all homes and public buildings should adhere to the standards as it is impossible to say that a home or public building is 100% unlikely to have a young child present at some point.

Installation Height

Under the Child Safety Standard, installation height is used to calculate the maximum permitted chain lengths. It is defined as the distance from the top of the blind to the floor when fitted.

Chain Lengths

The maximum length of control chains depends on the following

  • whether the installation height is known or unknown
  • the child safety components used for each type of blind
If the maximum chain length is longer than the blind, the chain will be finished to the same drop as the blind. Where white continuous chains are used, these are supplied in pre-set loops in 25cm increments. In this case the chain length will be rounded down to the next shorter size. Calculations for maximum chain lengths can be found on the opposite page.

Manufacturer's Labels & Warning Labels

All blinds will be supplied with our manufacturer's identification labels on the headrail and child safety warning labels attached to all control chains and to the chain tidy where relevant.

Installation

To ensure blinds are installed correctly, all chain tidy devices must be used and fitted at least 150cm from the floor. If no installation height was provided and the blind is being professionally installed the fitter must adjust the chain & safety devices so that when fitted it follows the known installation height rule.
